I'll write more about the Melbourne Test on what should have been either Day Four or Day Five, but for now here are my votes for Day Three of the Melbourne Test, ie, the day that Australia thwacked England by an innings.

Three points: Brett Lee; two points: Shane Warne; one point: Stuart Clark.

With one Test remaining, we have a clear leader. No prizes for guessing who...

Midwinter-Midwinter progress points

With two dead erasers still to go in The Ashes of 2006-07, The Biggest Tasmanian Since Errol Flynn has a slender lead in the polling for the Midwinter-Midwinter.

B.T.S.E.Flynn is one point ahead of The Bloke Named After Eddie's Football Team, with, not the Lord of the Rings, but the Lord of the Text Alerts one point further back in third place.

Midwinter-Midwinter progress

No I'm not still in shock after Australia's remarkable victory in the Second Test last Tuesday, I simply haven't had the time to write about it over the past week.

But to keep the Midwinter-Midwinter tally up to date, the points for Adelaide Day Five were - Shane Warne 3 pts; Ricky Ponting 2 pts; Mike Hussey 1 pt.

Australia 1, England 0: Remember 2005

First Test, Lords 2005: Australia defeated England by 239 runs. England won series 2-1.

First Test, Brisbane 2006-07: Australia defeated England by 277 runs. Is history about to repeat itself?

I doubt it. The yawning experience gap makes the difference this time, added to the intense hunger that the Australian team feels to regain the Ashes.

To update what I said on the announcement of the 2005 Award, you can take your Border-Gavaskar, Compton-Miller, Chappell-Hadlee, even your Peden-Archdale... I am now presenting my award for the Ashes Player of the Tournament.

Presenting: the Midwinter-Midwinter. Who needs to invoke the names of two legends when you can honour one person twice?

And now I've seen everything

I have just witnessed what can only be described as Test cricket's equivalent of the lowering of the Olympic flag, folding it up and carrying it away. After players left the field for bad light with Australia requiring 337 to win from 18.2 overs, umpires Rudi Koertzen and Billy Bowden returned to the field, marched down the pitch, turned around, looked at the sky, looked at each other, marched down to each wicket and lifted the bails.
